Thrills and Spills of “War of the Twins” Return to Kick-Off Donnie Smith Show Weekend

Tickets now on sale for electrifying Indoor Flat Track Races at Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum in March.

Authentic Indoor Flat Track motorcycle racing is returning to the Twin Cities for the second year on March 22, 2019 to kick-off the largest custom bike and car show weekend in the Midwest, the Donnie Smith Show – Midwest Extravaganza! Last year’s show was a breakout success nearly reaching attendance capacity, proving that the hunger for this style of racing action has never gone away in the Twin Cities. Tickets are now on sale for the War of the Twins II. All seats and VIP boxes are assigned by reservation only. The best seats will be purchased first, so enthusiasts are encouraged to make reservations early. Tickets are available for $15 in advance online. The first 500 children 12 and under in the door accompanied by a parent will receive free entry, two free children admissions per adult ticket purchase. VIP box seating tickets are an additional $25. Reservations may be made here: IndoorFlatTrack.com/tickets.

There’s nothing like the sound, fury or speed of flat track bikes launching off the stripe or ripping down the straightaway. Thirteen seasons, from 1968 to 1980, the revered Minneapolis Armory hosted “The Indoors,” indoor flat track racing that filled otherwise dreary winter months with handlebar-to-handlebar, down-and-dirty race action. Over those years, hundreds of privateer racers found a home in which to compete. As one of the largest, most successful and longest-running flat track events, The Indoors put the sport on the map. The Twin Cities welcomed the heart-pounding thunder of indoor flat track racing back again last March at the Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

“We were thrilled with the attendance and incredible reaction to the races last year,” said Neil Ryan, promoter of the Donnie Smith Bike & Car Show. “Flat track has played into that American spirit of independence, competitiveness, and the need for speed, the elements that make this such a great partner sport for the Donnie Smith Bike & Car Show. I rarely see a home run in its first year like we experienced. We expect this event to continue to grow and provide thrilling racing action for years to come.”

Sponsoring the Indoor Flat Track races are GEICO Motorcycle, Russ Brown, Sturgis Buffalo Chip, Lucas Oil and S&S Cycle.

Donnie Smith Show

The Donnie Smith Show Bike and Car Show presented by Dennis Kirk will take place at the St. Paul RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minn. on the two days following the races, Saturday, March 23 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 24 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to motorcycles and cars, the 225,000-square-foot indoor event showcases a popular swap meet billed as “The Largest Parts Extravaganza on the Planet.”

Tickets for the Donnie Smith Bike & Car Show will be coming soon. More information can be found by signing up for their newsletter at DonnieSmithShow.com.

Ride to SturgisIndian Motorcycle Sponsors Fourth Annual Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis

Veteran Non-Profit Organization Uses “Motorcycle Therapy” to Rehabilitate & Support Veterans Returning from Combat

Indian Motorcycle, America’s First Motorcycle Company, today announced its support and sponsorship of the fourth annual Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis. The veteran operated non-profit organization uses “motorcycle therapy” to help fellow veterans adjust to post-war life.

Many of the veterans joining the Veterans Charity Ride for the first time are amputees, paraplegics, or suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress and other issues veterans face after leaving the military. These new veterans will pair with veteran mentors who have already been through the Veterans Charity Ride program and receive one-on-one support to help their transition back to civilian life.

“We built a program specifically designed to assist wounded and amputee combat veterans with their needs and the issues they deal with on a daily basis. We give them the tools and a support structure to help get their life back on track following their tour of duty and life overseas,” said Dave Frey, Veterans Charity Ride Founder. “Many of our veterans used to ride motorcycles before their injuries and thought they never would ride again. Through support from companies like Indian Motorcycle and Champion Sidecar, we are able to get these vets back on bikes and enjoy the freedom of the open road.”

The Veterans Charity Ride will depart from Las Vegas on July 28 and travel through the most scenic roads of the western United States on Indian motorcycles. The eight-day ride to Sturgis will include a multi-day stop in Moab, Utah; where the participating veterans will experience the camaraderie of the group through off-road adventures and outdoor activities. The motorcycle ride will continue through Colorado, visiting Eagle and Fort Collins, and make its way through the Black Hills in South Dakota. On August 4, members of the Veterans Charity Ride will experience a “Hero’s Welcome” upon their arrival to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The journey not only delivers the freedom of the open road and cathartic experience only a motorcycle can deliver, but allows the veterans to bond by sharing stories and engage in peer-to-peer discussions.

Ride to Sturgis“Veterans Charity Ride is a life-changing program for those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director – Marketing and Product Planning for Indian Motorcycle. “Supporting the U.S. military has always been core to our brand DNA, and it’s an honor to give back by supporting a noble cause.”

The Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis was conceived and developed by veteran Army Paratrooper Dave Frey and Emmy Award-winning producer and director Robert Manciero of Full Vision Productions, leveraging the therapeutic effects of motorcycle riding to create an adventure of a lifetime for wounded veterans.

Primary sponsors of the Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis include Indian Motorcycle and Monster Energy Drink, with additional sponsorship and support provided by Champion Trikes & Sidecars, Cycle Gear, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, Wrangler Jeans and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.

Travis Pastrana To Jump An Indian Scout FTR750

Indian Scout FTR750Travis Pastrana To Jump An Indian Scout FTR750

In History’s Three Hour Live Event, Evel Live Premiering Sunday, July 8 At 8Pm Et/5Pm Pt

Press Release: Nitro Circus and Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, announced today that Travis Pastrana will be jumping an Indian Scout FTR750 when he looks to pay tribute to Evel Knievel, the founding father of motorcycle stunts, and surpass America’s most iconic daredevil. “Evel Live”, an unprecedented three-hour live event premiering Sunday, July 8th at 8PM ET/ 5PM PT on HISTORY in partnership with Nitro Circus, will see Travis Pastrana attempt three of Knievel’s most famed jumps on the Scout FTR750, including jumping the length of 52+ crushed cars, 16 Greyhound busses, and the ill-fated Caesars Palace fountain jump that left Knievel grasping for his life. If successful, Pastrana will be the first individual to complete all three jumps in one three-hour timespan and on a motorcycle similar to those Evel used.

Indian Scout FTR750The Indian Scout FTR750 is a flat track racing motorcycle designed to push the boundaries of speed and redefine control with two wheels firmly on the ground. Rewinding time, you find the motorcycles Evel jumped were designed for similar purposes. However, neither were intended for jumping.

“It was extremely important to use a motorcycle similar to the ones Evel jumped. The Indian Scout FTR 750 is just that, a modern-day evolution of the flat track motorcycles of the past,” said Pastrana. “It has the power I need and handles well, but I’m only going to have a few days to get comfortable on it, not to mention I’ve never jumped a V-twin before. I’ve got my work cut out, but we’re used to going big at Nitro Circus, so we’ll make it happen.”

The Indian Scout FTR750 is far different from the lightweight motocross bikes you would typically find Travis Pastrana jumping. The engine of the FTR750 features a powerful 750cc 53-degree V-Twin and utilizes 43mm conventional front suspension with an adjustable Ohlin’s mono-shock on the rear. Introduced in the American Flat Track racing series in 2017, the Indian Scout FTR750 secured 14 victories along with the manufacturer’s and rider’s championship in its first year of competition.

“We couldn’t be more excited for Travis to be piloting the Scout FTR750 as he looks to make history by recreating three of Evel Knievel’s most historic jumps in a single evening,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director, Marketing and Product Development for Indian Motorcycle. “Evel Knievel is truly a global icon, and we’re proud to be a part of this incredible event that pays homage to his legacy in such grand fashion.”

Will Travis Pastrana successfully complete all three jumps on the Indian Scout FTR 750? Tune-in to HISTORY on Sunday, July 8th at 8PM ET/ 5PM PT to find out.

To learn more about the Indian Scout FTR750 and Travis Pastrana’s attempt to make history with it on “Evel Live,” as well as for periodic updates leading up to the event, visit IndianMotorcycle.com or follow along on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.

Evel Knievel’s Jumps:

Caesar’s Palace Jump: 1967

  • He broke over 40 bones

50 Crushed Cars 1973

  • Knievel cleared 18 car widths — a total of 51 assorted crushed cars stacked in twos and threes, side by side.

4 Greyhound Buses: 1975

  • Record held for 24 years

NCOM ConventionNCOM Convention In Mobile, Alabama Welcomes Riders Nationwide

The 33rd annual NCOM Convention is coming soon, so plan now to be a part of one of the largest gathering of motorcycle rights activists in the world.  This year’s NCOM Convention, to be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-13, 2018 at the Renaissance / Riverview Plaza Hotel, located at 64 S. Water St., in Mobile, Alabama will draw hundreds of concerned motorcyclists from across America to “The Port City” to address topics of concern to all riders.

Agenda items will cover legal and legislative issues, with Special Meetings for Veterans Affairs, Women in Motorcycling, Clean & Sober Roundtable and World of Sport Bikes, as well as the Christian Unity Conference and Confederation of Clubs Patch Holders Meeting.

Among this year’s featured seminars, the NCOM Legislative Task Force will host a Mock Legislative Session to provide attendees with insight into the process of making laws; Jesse McDugald will present “You & Our Constitution”, and Slider Gilmore will discuss “What Successful People Do.”

All motorcyclists are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the many meetings, seminars and group discussions that focus on legislative efforts and litigation techniques to protect our riders’ rights and preserve Freedom of the Road.

In the meantime, the National Coalition of Motorcyclists is requesting that MROs, motorcycle clubs, and riding associations submit the names of those members and supporters who have passed away over the past year, so that we may honor their memories with the traditional “Ringing of the Bell” tribute to fallen riders during the opening ceremonies.  Dedications should be e-mailed in advance to Bill Bish at NCOMBish@aol.com, or can be hand-delivered at the Convention to “Doc” Reichenbach, NCOM Chairman of the Board.

4th Invitational Why We Ride to The Quail

The Quail4th Invitational Why We Ride to The Quail Raising Much-needed Funds for Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

Scenic Motorcycle Tour for Charity Set for May 3–5

Moorpark, CA (March 6, 2018) – The Fourth Invitational WHY WE RIDE to the Quail charity trek will take place May 3, 4 and 5. The ride begins in historic Moorpark and takes us to picturesque Pismo Beach, CA, then moves into the wooded hillsides and gorgeous valleys of Paso Robles wine country, following along the most seductive road in California, and arriving at the beaches of Monterey in time for The Quail Motorcycle Gathering. All proceeds go to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

“Last year was a revelation,” said Bryan Carroll, producer of Why We Ride Films, organizers of the event. “The number of people who participated, and the diversity, was really inspirational. Riders came from multiple states and countries as far away as Mexico and India.”

dsc_7727_34438706934_oPeople of all stripes with a common love of motorcycle riding came together and took part, and that same wide array of participants are signing up this year as well. One-third of entrants for this year’s ride are new, building on word-of-mouth raving by past and returning riders and growing a community of like-minded people that feels like a large, extended family.

Of course, everyone loves a good cause, but the diversity of sponsors and participants really illustrates how the Hollywood, motorcycling and other communities have united to benefit those in need, namely children with serious medical issues. The ride has consistently doubled its raise every year, and this type of growth in funds raised is expected again this year.

Participants in the charity ride enjoy a bevy of perks (in addition to the awesome ride), including cocktails and vittles at the WWR Riders Dinner, gift bags, special guest speakers and VIP access to The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, including a private ride to the event, exclusive parking and private lounge access.

“Participants really engaged last year,” said Bryan Carroll. “We had a lot of people with a lot of different backgrounds, and everyone really came together, had fun and bonded. We’re looking to build on that this year, then really ramp things up for next year’s big fifth-annual ride.”

Of course, none of this would be possible without great sponsorship. Last year’s list of sponsors topped 25, and this year’s array for the Fourth Invitational WHY WE RIDE to The Quail is shaping up, including Refuse Specialists, Indian Motorcycles, MotoDoffo Wines, KlockWerks, D73 Leathers, Aerial Vuz, Formosa Group, eGrafx, Simi Valley Cycles and idPlatforms, with many more in the works. There are a few openings left for sponsorship, and anyone interested can contact ken@riseaboveconsulting.com.

Motorcycles as ArtSturgis Buffalo Chip’s 2018 Motorcycles as Art Exhibit

Michael Lichter Curates “Passion Built – Garage to Gallery

For the 10th year, Custom bikes built from the pure passion and love of the machine will be exhibited at the Buffalo Chip free to the public this August.

The pure love of art and motorcycles will bring together a stunning collection of masterpieces for the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s 2018 Motorcycle As Art exhibit, titled “Passion Built – Garage to Gallery.” The exhibit, curated by Michael Lichter, will feature the work of over 40 builders and artists who demonstrate incredible passion and have built motorcycles especially for this show. All support themselves by other means, yet they all are building professional-quality custom motorcycles outside of a professional workplace. Each bike will be lit with theater lights and displayed atop an elevated pedestal to better give guests an open view from every angle. The Sturgis Buffalo Chip will host the exhibit in a 7,000 sq. ft. dedicated gallery in its Event Center. The exhibit is free to the public 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4 through Friday, Aug. 10.
Motorcycles as Art
“Michael has once again brought together a group of incredible artists and builders who all have a real passion for motorcycles,” said Rod Woodruff, Sturgis Buffalo Chip President. “The fact that these people are creating these bikes, mostly in the evenings or weekends, after a full work-week, is amazing. We will clearly see their love for the work on display this year. Everyone attending the 2018 Rally really should see this free exhibit.”

It Isn’t Just a Small Handful
The Motorcycles As Art exhibit has become more than just a bike show in its 10-year residency at the Buffalo Chip. Industry professionals frequent these one-time collections to examine the new ideas and trends put on display by builders from all walks of life and geographic locations.

“We are looking for the best custom bikes these builders can produce, hopefully the best they have ever built, to show off how diverse the world of custom bike building is,” said exhibit curator Michael Lichter. “It isn’t just a small handful of professionals who are driving this world and deciding where it is headed, nor has it ever been. Now, through new means of communication, these non-pros have a bigger voice than ever before.”
Motorcycles as Art
Energy Drives the Passion for Diverse Group of Builders
As a follow up to the 2017 “Old Iron – Young Blood” exhibit, which focused on the work of builders under age 35, this exhibit broadens the diversity of the artists to include those passionate about custom building motorcycles even through retirement.

Most of those chosen for the 2018 exhibit must find the energy and passion to work on their projects after returning home from a full-time day job. Some, such as Harley-Davidson Motor Company Vice President of Styling & Design Brad Richards, work in the industry but must still find personal time to fuel their passion for building. Musicians Xavier Muriel of Buckcherry and Gilby Clarke formerly of Guns and Roses will both be displaying their new creations. From attorney Dave Polgreen to lighting expert Randy Noldge, the list of exhibitors for the 2018 Motorcycles As Art show brings together a varied group of motorcycle builders with a deep-seated desire to create.

“The diverse list of builders and two-dimensional artists coming together to display this year are all doing this for the sheer joy of building a custom bike from scratch,” said Lichter. “It may not be about anything more than bragging rights. These people are really creating a type of folk art without thought of reward. The enormous amount of time and energy results in custom bikes on par with any made by professional builders. And, the display of energy and enthusiasm demonstrated make this show a great follow-up to last year’s exhibit by millennials.”

Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run

CannonballThe Transcontinental Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run

Press Release: Jason Sims, owner of the Motorcycle Cannonball in Sturgis, South Dakota, has announced that the historic transcontinental event scheduled for 16 days in September has its roster full and the route is set. Though held on U.S. soil, the international line up of riders from 5 continents certainly makes the 2018 run a global event.

According to Sims, this remarkable endurance ride for pre-1929 antique motorcycles will get underway in Portland, Maine on Saturday, September 8 and will include riders from around the world. With 100 entries from 32 states and 10 countries, this extraordinary event will indeed be watched world wide as motorcyclists on all marques tackle an arduous coast-to-coast route across America. From the lighthouses of Portland, Maine to the snowcapped mountains Portland, Oregon, the entire route will include less than 10-miles of interstate roadways. A week into travel, riders will have a day of rest, repairs, and some festivities in the motorcycling mecca of Sturgis, South Dakota on September 17. After a total of some 3,649 miles, the ride is slated to conclude on Sunday, September 23 in Portland, Oregon.

the line up
During the MCR event, participants will ride vintage pre-1929 motorcycles such as Henderson, Indian, Triumph, Harley-Davidson, Norton, Excelsior, BSA, Thor and others. Among the more remarkable marques will be a Brough Superior, an Ace and an American Single. A 1926 Rudge is also expected to line up in Maine, as will a Reading Standard and an Ariel. This is the fifth biannual transcontinental Cannonball, and as with runs of the past, the event is a timed test of both the rider’s endurance and the roadworthiness of their respective vintage machines as they navigate America’s back roads through some of the most scenic areas of the country. Irma gets to ride_I7D9329

“This route is going to be a challenge, we’ve never taken such a northerly route. The terrain combined with the range in ages of the bikes is going to make for an interesting run,” Sims shared. “We’ll cover some of the best riding areas in the country. It’s going to be a difficult trip and we’ll have a lot of long days and hard riding.”

Sims said that, while he and MCR Course Master John Classen are still working out the final details, it’s clear that the second week of the event will be grueling as riders make their way along the Rockies and into the Pacific Northwest region. Throughout the run, according to Classen, the spectacular scenery will awe participants as they pilot their time machines along several picturesque national parks, monuments and museums.

The 2018 Motorcycle Cannonball Run’s roster includes new riders from South Africa, New Zealand and England as well as returning rider Ciro Nisi from Italy, Harry Verkuil from Scotland and Juergen Ullerich from Germany. World traveling rider personality Doug Wothke is returning, as will Cris and Pat Simmons, Victor Boocock and several other United States riders. Southern California bike builder Shinya Kimura will also be at the starting line. He is the only rider who has navigated all five runs on the same 1915 Indian motorcycle. Each entrant has their own amazing story to tell and is anxious to tackle this year’s route through 13 states to arrive at the Grand Finish in Portland, Oregon.

Complete information about the Motorcycle Cannonball Run, including route details and some rider profiles, is available at  www.motorcyclecannonball.com.

Midnight Rider's Rally

Gregg Allman And Southern Blood To Be Celebrated By Harley-Davidson With Special Events Across North America

“The Midnight Rider’s Rally” Slated for September 8th at Select Harley-Davidson locations everywhere

Press Release: Rounder Records and select Harley-Davison locations are uniting for “The Midnight Rider’s Rally,” a very special event commemorating the final album from the legendary Gregg Allman. SOUTHERN BLOOD arrives everywhere on Friday, September 8th.

Southern Blood  is available for pre-order now at digital music retailers and the Gregg Allman Official Store. A wide array of limited editions and special bundles are on offer, including digital download, Standard and Deluxe CD/DVD, and limited edition heavyweight vinyl and vinyl test presses. For complete pre-order details, please visit the Gregg Allman Official Store.

SOUTHERN BLOOD EXCLUSIVE PRE-ORDER BUNDLES AVAILABLE HERE

SOUTHERN BLOOD includes the new original song, “My Only True Friend,” written by Allman with Gregg Allman Band guitarist/musical director Scott Sharrard. The track – available now at all digital music retailers and streaming services – premiered earlier this summer exclusively via NPR Music, which raved, “From its stately introduction through a wrenching guitar solo at the close, the track exudes a surefooted classic-rock grandeur we don’t hear much anymore. Yet Allman keeps it on an intimate scale…Allman sings like he’s confiding to a friend, distilling hours of stock-taking and introspection. He’s plainspoken, like always, and his casual air adds disarming resonance to what is clearly a farewell statement.” “My Only True Friend” is joined by a powerfully moving official video, streaming now at Gregg Allman’s official YouTube channel after its exclusive premiere via Relix.

“The Midnight Rider’s Rally” will take place Friday, September 8th at select Harley-Davidson locations across North America. Fans can register for their local rally via the Gregg Allman Official Store; a portion of the $20 registration benefits the Allman/Lehman Endowed Scholarship at Syracuse University, with all registrations also receiving a digital download of SOUTHERN BLOOD.

BiketoberfestBiketoberfest 2017 Celebrates 25-Year Chrome Anniversary

25th Annual Biketoberfest Motorcycle Rally October 19-22 In Daytona Beach

Press Release: It’s almost time to polish those bikes and head to Daytona Beach for the 25th Anniversary (we’re calling it our “Chrome anniversary”, just for fun) of Biketoberfest October 19-22, 2017! Organizers are preparing to welcome up to 150,000 riders and visitors from around the world to the four-day motorcycle rally.

At the Official Biketoberfest Welcome Center on Beach Street, staff will be passing out free (while supplies last) 25th Anniversary collectible Official Biketoberfest posters, pocket guides and pins, and encouraging visitors to mark their home town on world maps.

“We have a core audience that’s been attending this event since the start,” said Lori Campbell Baker, executive director of the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), “and it’s not uncommon to see Brazil, Canada, Germany and the UK pinned on the maps. It’s amazing to see the international crowd this rally draws, as well as the increase in women riders and sportbikes over the years, and the youth drawn to the rally’s signature racing events at Daytona International Speedway.”

Biketoberfest officially kicks off with a press conference to be held at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday, October 19, at 10 a.m. and is open to the public. Held on the Harley-Davidson Thunder Alley Stage next to the FPL Solar Pavilion in the Midway, this fan-friendly area is also a major hub of Biketoberfest activity. The rally tradition will continue along Main Street, Riverfront Park and Midtown in Daytona Beach, as well as at Destination Daytona and US1 in Ormond Beach, and throughout Volusia County in nearby New Smyrna Beach and DeLand.

Signature Events:

Manufacturer’s ChampionshipIndian Motorcycle Racing Secures Manufacturer’s Championship With Jared Mees’ Second-Place Finish At Peoria TT

The Indian Wrecking Crew & Scout FTR750 Obtain the 2017 AFT Manufacturer’s Championship with 11 Victories & 30 Total Podiums Through 14 Races

Press Release: After more than 60 years away from professional flat track racing, Indian Motorcycle has won the 2017 American Flat Track Manufacturer’s Championship after a second-place finish at the Peoria TT.

Indian Wrecking Crew rider Jared Mees locked in the title for Indian Motorcycle with a strong second-place finish. Teammates Bryan Smith and Brad Baker finished strong in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

“Securing the Manufacturer’s Championship through 14 races is an unbelievable accomplishment,” said Gary Gray, Vice President – Product for Indian Motorcycle. “To return to professional flat track racing after more than 60 years away from the sport and win the championship on a brand-new Scout FTR750 race bike is a testament to all the hard work from the entire Indian Motorcycle Racing team.”

American Flat Track recognizes Manufacturer Champions in each class. The manufacturer that accumulates the most points in each class over the course of a season is declared the Manufacturer Champion.  With four races remaining, and Indian ahead of the next manufacturer by more than of 100 points, Indian Motorcycle has guaranteed a Manufacturer Championship.

Aboard the Scout FTR750, the Indian Wrecking Crew have combined for 30 of the season’s 42 total podiums. Mees, the season’s point leader, holds a 41-point lead ahead of Smith, while Baker rounds out the top three in the season’s standings.  Mees and Smith have tallied 11 first-place finishes, with seven going to Mees and four to Smith.

Indian Motorcycle Racing, backed by Allstate Insurance, has its sights set on an individual championship as American Flat Track returns to the Springfield Mile on September 3.

Indian Motorcycle Celebrates Burt Munro’s Legacy and the 50th Anniversary Of His Land Speed Record At Bonneville Salt Flats

Historic Tribute Highlighted by “Spirit of Munro” Land Speed Runs and Capped Off by Moonlit Screening of “The World’s Fastest Indian” with Director Roger Donaldson

Press Release: This past weekend, Indian Motorcycle kicked off the 69th annual Bonneville Speed Week by paying tribute to its iconic heritage and the 50th anniversary of Burt Munro’s historic land speed record in grand fashion. The tribute was highlighted by commemorative land speed runs by Munro’s great nephew Lee Munro on a modified 2017 Indian Scout appropriately named “Spirit of Munro.” America’s first motorcycle company capped off the weekend with something that had never been done before – a moonlit screening of “The World’s Fastest Indian” under the desert sky for Speed Week campers.

The World’s Fastest Indian,” staring Sir Anthony Hopkins, immortalized Burt Munro and the historic under-1000 cc world record run of his 1920 Scout Streamliner in August of 1967. Prior to its special commemorative screening on the Bonneville campground, the film’s director Roger Donaldson and Burt’s son and grand nephew,

John and Lee Munro, shared anecdotes about the making of the film, Burt Munro and the impact his achievements have had on Indian Motorcycle and motorcycling in general. The talks and screening drew throngs of Speed Week attendees who were captivated by the feature film, cheering and clapping throughout as they watched under an immaculate starry night sky.

“I’ve seen the movie countless times. But to watch it with Speed Week attendees, the Munro family and the film’s director on the very Bonneville grounds that the film was based upon, was a surreal experience,” said Reid Wilson, Indian Motorcycle Marketing Director. “It was a special way to honor Burt and the perfect way to compliment the efforts of Lee Munro and our Spirit of Munro racing team on the Salt Flats that weekend.”

Indian Motorcycle teamed up with Kiwi road racer Lee Munro, Burt Munro’s great nephew, to celebrate the 50th anniversary and recreate the historic run during the 69th annual Speed Week. A team of engineers worked nights and weekends to create and refine Lee’s “Spirit of Munro” Motorcycle, a modified and partially streamlined 2017 Scout. The team’s goal was to match Burt’s land speed record of 184 MPH to fully pay tribute to his run. To qualify for Bonneville, Lee achieved his speed licenses through runs at El Mirage Dry Lakebed in California, while even securing a land speed record of 186.681 MPH in the MPS-G (Modified Partial Streamliner) 1350cc class during his rookie run and surpassing the team’s original goal.

Entering Bonneville, the team’s new goal was to eclipse the 200 MPH mark. However, Lee’s runs proved to be a battle against the elements. Lee attempted his first two runs on the five-mile short course, resulting in his top performance of the weekend at 191.28 MPH and an unofficial run due to timer technical error. The following day, Lee and team made gearing changes and took the modified 2017 Indian Scout out on Bonneville’s nine-mile long course. Unfortunately, high winds and rough overall conditions hindered the motorcycle, resulting in 186.415 MPH in his lone run of the day. On Monday, the team took another attempt on a newly routed long course, yet rough surface conditions forced Munro to exit his run before completing the timed section.

“It was my greatest honor to represent Indian Motorcycle in such an incredible tribute to my great uncle on this historic 50th Anniversary,” said Lee Munro. “We may not have had the results we were after, but piloting a modified Indian Scout on the same salt as my great Uncle Burt will forever be one of my most-cherished experiences. I’m looking forward to future runs and more success with my teammates and friends at Indian Motorcycle.”
