Harley-Davidson Narrows U.S. Finalists In “Battle Of The Kings” Custom Bike Build Competition

42,000 Votes Cast for People’s Choice Winners; Next Round of Judging Gets Rolling

After fierce online competition, the people have spoken, casting 42,000 votes for the coolest custom motorcycles in the United States. Twenty-one U.S. custom bike builds reign as the “People’s Choice” award winners in Harley-Davidson’s Battle of the Kings competition.

From April 15 to May 15, public voters cast an online ballot for their favorite custom bike across three categories: Chop, Race and Dirt. Competition was steep, featuring more than 40 builds created in partnership with Harley-Davidson dealers and local trade school students from across the nation. To view* the “People’s Choice” winners locate the award badge on the winning motorcycles at H-D.com/BattleOfTheKings.

Though the Battle of the Kings competition first revved up in 2015, it’s the first year that U.S. trade school students were invited to partner with local dealers for a unique, real-world training opportunity. Under the guidance of experienced Harley-Davidson mechanics, students were introduced to the creativity, customization prowess and technical precision of motorcycle customization.

“With this competition, we are seeing first-hand the passion and drive these students have not only for motorcycling but for leaning into new experiences that teach them how to think big,” said Heather Malenshek, Harley-Davidson Chief Marketing Officer. “Battle of the Kings allows these students to apply their creativity and funnel this passion into real-life applications that will ride with them for generations.”

As the competition continues to roll towards the final crowning of one U.S. Battle of the Kings Champion, the first 18 finalists were announced on Monday, June 10. Harley-Davidson marketing and styling employees selected the top 18 finalists – the top six from each of the three build categories. These bikes have a ‘Category Finalist’ award badge affixed to their motorcycle in the gallery at h-d.com.

The second round of judging will narrow these 18 down to one in each build category of Chop, Dirt and Race. The finalists are set to be announced by July 1 and will be judged by top journalists from American Iron Magazine, Cycle World and Cycle Source as well as Harley-Davidson enthusiast, Milo Ventimiglia, from the TV Series This is Us.

These top three finalists will then go head to head for the U.S. title at the Annual Harley-Davidson Dealer Meeting held in Milwaukee in August. The competition doesn’t end there, as later in November the U.S. winning bike and its build crew will travel to Milan, Italy to compete with four other global finalists for the ultimate title of “Battle of the Kings Champion.”

Holding these titles is nothing to scoff at. The Battle of the Kings contest is the largest dealer custom bike build competition in the world highlighting the endless possibilities to personalize Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Since its beginnings, Battle of the Kings has created more than 500 custom bikes.Through programs like Battle of the Kings, Harley-Davidson is building the next generation of skilled tradespeople and inspiring students to get involved in the exciting world of motorcycle customization.

See the builds from dealerships around the world and sign up to get your free Battle of the Kings sticker by visiting H-D.com/BattleOfTheKings. Follow the competition on social media with #BattleOfTheKings.

5th WHY WE RIDE to The Quail Charity Motorcycle Ride

5th WHY WE RIDE to The Quail Charity Motorcycle Ride

Sets Aggressive Goal for Much-needed Funds for Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Scenic Motorcycle Tour for Charity Set for May 2–4

The sold out Fifth Invitational WHY WE RIDE to The Quail charity motorcycle trek will take place May 2, 3 and 4. Why We Ride began as a movie about passion for motorcycling but very quickly evolved into something else entirely: one of the biggest social motorcycle movements in over 40 years. The Why We Ride team knew that the dedication and generosity of the motorcycle community was an incredible resource, and they set out to harness it with a simple mission statement: inspire, educate and celebrate.

“When our Why We Ride film crew member Joseph Northrup passed away from a brain tumor he had been battling since childhood, a new goal became clear,” said Bryan Carroll, producer of Why We Ride Films, organizers of the event. For five years, we’ve partnered with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation to defeat the deadliest childhood cancer, and this year we’re setting our most aggressive fund-raising goal thus far.”

To aid in reaching that goal this year, riders are now able to fundraise on their own. Participating riders can be sponsored as individuals or teams, with donations from friends, families, co-workers and members of the public contributing directly to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Sponsors can then stay involved with the journey via live feeds and social media updates. One hundred percent of all funds raised will go to the foundation. This year, over forty sponsors (almost double from last year), 100 riders and 21 volunteers from 12 states and 3 countries are uniting to support this great cause.

Currently there are dozens of teams signed up to help raise funds for the  Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation with over $3500 raised. The goal is to raise $10,000 and there is a week left before the ride starts. The donations go directly to the  Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation with only four percent of federal research funding are dedicated to childhood cancers, and a fraction of that goes toward pediatric brain tumors it is important to donate today. There are more than 100 different types of pediatric brain tumors in need of a cure, and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation aims to remedy every one of them. WHY WE RIDE to The Quail seeks to help them in that goal.

“This event has grown every year for five years,” said Bryan Carroll. “We have a lot of people with a lot of different backgrounds, and everyone comes together, has fun and bonds. There’s a commonality we share: a love for motorcycling and the desire to help those in heed.”

The Why We Ride team invites you to join them on their journey and help in their mission to bring afflicted children and their families hope.

Early American Transportation Innovation

Early American Transportation INNOVATION

Acting on a tip from a Museum supporter, about two years ago the National Motorcycle Museum learned of an aviation and cycle car collection in Minnesota that needed a new home. A GoFundMe campaign was launched making a call for support in acquiring the 42 foot wingspan 1911 Aerohydroplane and cycle car in storage for decades. Important for their innovation, and original condition, the Aerohydroplane and car were the work of Chicago aviation inventor James Stephens.

In 2016 the plane was disassembled by three antique aviation experts, loaded into two tractor trailers and brought to the National Motorcycle Museum where later the men reassembled it. Surrounded by innovative pre-1920 American  motorcycles, bicycles, toys and memorabilia the Early American Transportation INNOVATION exhibit is now open. “So many interesting approaches to transportation were tried, so many patents established in these early years. The motorcycles, bicycles and the airplane show so much interesting and creative American innovation,” says National Motorcycle Museum chairman, Jill Parham. “This was a challenging project in so many ways. We are grateful to the Minnesota Air & Space Museum for donating the collection, the monetary donations of support and for all the volunteers who helped get it installed in our Museum.” Motorcycles on display include a replica 1869 Roper Steam Cycle, Flying Merkel, Iver Johnson, Reading Standard, Excelsior, Thor, Sears, Thomas, the very rare Blue Bird and Crouch plus fine Indians and Harley-Davidsons.”

“What’s the Skinny: Motorcycling Without the Fat” Curated by Michael Lichter

Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s 2019 Motorcycles as Art Exhibit

The 2019 exhibition is free to the public and will showcase over 40 of the world’s top builders and artists at the Buffalo Chip this August.

More than 40 of the world’s top motorcycle builders and artists will be offering their take on light and lean in the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s 2019 Motorcycles as Art exhibit titled “What’s the Skinny – Motorcycling without the Fat”, curated by Michael Lichter. This collection of bikes, which includes a majority of custom bikes built specifically for this exhibition, also include bikes with historic significance. They will be displayed together only for this exclusive, seven-day event.  The gallery-style exhibit will give guests an open view of the bikes from every angle, with each bike displayed atop an elevated pedestal and lit with theater lights. The Sturgis Buffalo Chip will host the exhibit in a 7,000 sq. ft. dedicated gallery in its Event Center. The exhibit is open free to the public 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3 through Friday, Aug. 9.

“Each year Michael brings together some of the most talented people on the planet to participate in this exhibit,” said Rod Woodruff, Sturgis Buffalo Chip President. “They all come together, creating a collection of motorcycles surrounding this skinny theme which is sure to inspire some real beauties. We’re very pleased to be able to offer such a world-class show free to the public.”

Nothing New is Young Again
There are no rules restricting the builders on type and size of tires, how much the primary can stick out or an absolute maximum width for the fuel tank and handlebars. Lichter based each builder’s inclusion solely on past bikes they have built and their interest in the “skinny” aesthetic. The bikes they build are limited only by their imagination and ingenuity, which is why industry professionals have been known to frequent the exhibit to pick up new ideas and trends

“Skinny bikes aren’t new,” said exhibit curator Michael Lichter. At the dawn of the 20th century, bikes were all very light. No sooner had they appeared and riders were racing them on board tracks. Skinny meant fast and has continued to do so in all forms of racing. One thing I love about the re-emergence of skinny bikes as a style is looking at them from the back; straight-on with their thin tires, clean lines, narrow primaries with exposed chains, and handlebars barely wider than their slim tanks. I’m excited to see what these builders are going to bring to the table this year.”

The Builders and Artists
A list of participating artists who will be displaying works consistent with the theme will be announced in the coming weeks. Some of the best pinstripe artists in the world, coordinated and including Ray Drea of Harley-Davidson, will also be contributing pieces.

The list of custom motorcycle builders and two-dimensional artists so far scheduled to present their skinny masterpieces at the 2019 “Motorcycles as Art” exhibit include:

The Easy Rider Bikes are in the Easyriders Garage!

The Easy Rider Bikes are in the Easyriders Garage!

Many years ago Mil Blair and Easy Winiskary of Jammer Cycles built replicas of the iconic Captain America and Billy bikes for the Easyriders Rodeos. Ridden hard and put away wet for decades, the bike began to show their age, until they became display bikes instead of leading the pack into the arena. We knew that this is something that needed to be remedied as soon as possible.

Enter Rob Schwellinger and the Easyriders Garage. Rob is currently hard at work mechanically restoring these iconic rides, and it is all happening at the Easyriders Bikes shows, now traveling to Austin, Texas, January 19, and later the Grand National Bike Show in Charlotte, North Carolina, January 26-27. Skid Row to Kick Off 38th Annual Motorcycle and Music Festival at Sturgis Buffalo Chip

“The Best Party Anywhere!” parties on the wrong side of the tracks with the heavy metal opener on Friday, Aug. 2, 2019.

Press Release: The 2019 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will kick off with head-banging, heavy metal sensations Skid Row on the Buffalo Chip’s Wolfman Jack Stage on Friday, Aug. 2, 2019. The band is one of the best old-school hard rock bands to come out of the 80’s, having sold over 20 million albums, and they’ve continued to take audiences on their heavy metal journey ever since. See the announcement video here:  BuffaloChip.com/BANDS

“We’re kicking off the 79th Sturgis Rally with a super cool, heavy metal explosion,” said Rod Woodruff, Sturgis Buffalo Chip President, “It’s easy to book some cheap, no-name tribute band for opening night, but that’s not how we roll at the Chip. We’re powering off with world-class, fan favorite, hard rock stars.”

Skid Row blasted onto the heavy metal scene in the late 1980’s, releasing two critically acclaimed albums, “Skid Row” and “Slave to the Grind,” which took off like a rocket and landed with certified multi-platinum status at no. 1 on the Billboard 200. The band has produced two top ten singles, “18 and Life,” and “I Remember You.” They were awarded American Music Awards “Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock New Artist” in 1990.

The 38th annual festival noted as “The Best Party Anywhere” will open with a pre-rally party July 29 – Aug. 1, 2019, with official festival dates running Aug. 2-11, 2019. Performers announced so far include:

Donnie Smith Show Weekend

Thrills and Spills of “War of the Twins” Return to Kick-Off Donnie Smith Show Weekend

Tickets now on sale for electrifying Indoor Flat Track Races at Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum in March.

Authentic Indoor Flat Track motorcycle racing is returning to the Twin Cities for the second year on March 22, 2019 to kick-off the largest custom bike and car show weekend in the Midwest, the Donnie Smith Show – Midwest Extravaganza! Last year’s show was a breakout success nearly reaching attendance capacity, proving that the hunger for this style of racing action has never gone away in the Twin Cities. Tickets are now on sale for the War of the Twins II. All seats and VIP boxes are assigned by reservation only. The best seats will be purchased first, so enthusiasts are encouraged to make reservations early. Tickets are available for $15 in advance online. The first 500 children 12 and under in the door accompanied by a parent will receive free entry, two free children admissions per adult ticket purchase. VIP box seating tickets are an additional $25. Reservations may be made here: IndoorFlatTrack.com/tickets.

There’s nothing like the sound, fury or speed of flat track bikes launching off the stripe or ripping down the straightaway. Thirteen seasons, from 1968 to 1980, the revered Minneapolis Armory hosted “The Indoors,” indoor flat track racing that filled otherwise dreary winter months with handlebar-to-handlebar, down-and-dirty race action. Over those years, hundreds of privateer racers found a home in which to compete. As one of the largest, most successful and longest-running flat track events, The Indoors put the sport on the map. The Twin Cities welcomed the heart-pounding thunder of indoor flat track racing back again last March at the Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

“We were thrilled with the attendance and incredible reaction to the races last year,” said Neil Ryan, promoter of the Donnie Smith Bike & Car Show. “Flat track has played into that American spirit of independence, competitiveness, and the need for speed, the elements that make this such a great partner sport for the Donnie Smith Bike & Car Show. I rarely see a home run in its first year like we experienced. We expect this event to continue to grow and provide thrilling racing action for years to come.”

Sponsoring the Indoor Flat Track races are GEICO Motorcycle, Russ Brown, Sturgis Buffalo Chip, Lucas Oil and S&S Cycle.

Donnie Smith Show

The Donnie Smith Show Bike and Car Show presented by Dennis Kirk will take place at the St. Paul RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minn. on the two days following the races, Saturday, March 23 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 24 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to motorcycles and cars, the 225,000-square-foot indoor event showcases a popular swap meet billed as “The Largest Parts Extravaganza on the Planet.”

Tickets for the Donnie Smith Bike & Car Show will be coming soon. More information can be found by signing up for their newsletter at DonnieSmithShow.com.

Ride to SturgisIndian Motorcycle Sponsors Fourth Annual Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis

Veteran Non-Profit Organization Uses “Motorcycle Therapy” to Rehabilitate & Support Veterans Returning from Combat

Indian Motorcycle, America’s First Motorcycle Company, today announced its support and sponsorship of the fourth annual Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis. The veteran operated non-profit organization uses “motorcycle therapy” to help fellow veterans adjust to post-war life.

Many of the veterans joining the Veterans Charity Ride for the first time are amputees, paraplegics, or suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress and other issues veterans face after leaving the military. These new veterans will pair with veteran mentors who have already been through the Veterans Charity Ride program and receive one-on-one support to help their transition back to civilian life.

“We built a program specifically designed to assist wounded and amputee combat veterans with their needs and the issues they deal with on a daily basis. We give them the tools and a support structure to help get their life back on track following their tour of duty and life overseas,” said Dave Frey, Veterans Charity Ride Founder. “Many of our veterans used to ride motorcycles before their injuries and thought they never would ride again. Through support from companies like Indian Motorcycle and Champion Sidecar, we are able to get these vets back on bikes and enjoy the freedom of the open road.”

The Veterans Charity Ride will depart from Las Vegas on July 28 and travel through the most scenic roads of the western United States on Indian motorcycles. The eight-day ride to Sturgis will include a multi-day stop in Moab, Utah; where the participating veterans will experience the camaraderie of the group through off-road adventures and outdoor activities. The motorcycle ride will continue through Colorado, visiting Eagle and Fort Collins, and make its way through the Black Hills in South Dakota. On August 4, members of the Veterans Charity Ride will experience a “Hero’s Welcome” upon their arrival to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The journey not only delivers the freedom of the open road and cathartic experience only a motorcycle can deliver, but allows the veterans to bond by sharing stories and engage in peer-to-peer discussions.

Ride to Sturgis“Veterans Charity Ride is a life-changing program for those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director – Marketing and Product Planning for Indian Motorcycle. “Supporting the U.S. military has always been core to our brand DNA, and it’s an honor to give back by supporting a noble cause.”

The Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis was conceived and developed by veteran Army Paratrooper Dave Frey and Emmy Award-winning producer and director Robert Manciero of Full Vision Productions, leveraging the therapeutic effects of motorcycle riding to create an adventure of a lifetime for wounded veterans.

Primary sponsors of the Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis include Indian Motorcycle and Monster Energy Drink, with additional sponsorship and support provided by Champion Trikes & Sidecars, Cycle Gear, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, Wrangler Jeans and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.

Travis Pastrana To Jump An Indian Scout FTR750

Indian Scout FTR750Travis Pastrana To Jump An Indian Scout FTR750

In History’s Three Hour Live Event, Evel Live Premiering Sunday, July 8 At 8Pm Et/5Pm Pt

Press Release: Nitro Circus and Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, announced today that Travis Pastrana will be jumping an Indian Scout FTR750 when he looks to pay tribute to Evel Knievel, the founding father of motorcycle stunts, and surpass America’s most iconic daredevil. “Evel Live”, an unprecedented three-hour live event premiering Sunday, July 8th at 8PM ET/ 5PM PT on HISTORY in partnership with Nitro Circus, will see Travis Pastrana attempt three of Knievel’s most famed jumps on the Scout FTR750, including jumping the length of 52+ crushed cars, 16 Greyhound busses, and the ill-fated Caesars Palace fountain jump that left Knievel grasping for his life. If successful, Pastrana will be the first individual to complete all three jumps in one three-hour timespan and on a motorcycle similar to those Evel used.

Indian Scout FTR750The Indian Scout FTR750 is a flat track racing motorcycle designed to push the boundaries of speed and redefine control with two wheels firmly on the ground. Rewinding time, you find the motorcycles Evel jumped were designed for similar purposes. However, neither were intended for jumping.

“It was extremely important to use a motorcycle similar to the ones Evel jumped. The Indian Scout FTR 750 is just that, a modern-day evolution of the flat track motorcycles of the past,” said Pastrana. “It has the power I need and handles well, but I’m only going to have a few days to get comfortable on it, not to mention I’ve never jumped a V-twin before. I’ve got my work cut out, but we’re used to going big at Nitro Circus, so we’ll make it happen.”

The Indian Scout FTR750 is far different from the lightweight motocross bikes you would typically find Travis Pastrana jumping. The engine of the FTR750 features a powerful 750cc 53-degree V-Twin and utilizes 43mm conventional front suspension with an adjustable Ohlin’s mono-shock on the rear. Introduced in the American Flat Track racing series in 2017, the Indian Scout FTR750 secured 14 victories along with the manufacturer’s and rider’s championship in its first year of competition.

“We couldn’t be more excited for Travis to be piloting the Scout FTR750 as he looks to make history by recreating three of Evel Knievel’s most historic jumps in a single evening,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director, Marketing and Product Development for Indian Motorcycle. “Evel Knievel is truly a global icon, and we’re proud to be a part of this incredible event that pays homage to his legacy in such grand fashion.”

Will Travis Pastrana successfully complete all three jumps on the Indian Scout FTR 750? Tune-in to HISTORY on Sunday, July 8th at 8PM ET/ 5PM PT to find out.

4th Invitational Why We Ride to The Quail

The Quail4th Invitational Why We Ride to The Quail Raising Much-needed Funds for Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

Scenic Motorcycle Tour for Charity Set for May 3–5

Moorpark, CA (March 6, 2018) – The Fourth Invitational WHY WE RIDE to the Quail charity trek will take place May 3, 4 and 5. The ride begins in historic Moorpark and takes us to picturesque Pismo Beach, CA, then moves into the wooded hillsides and gorgeous valleys of Paso Robles wine country, following along the most seductive road in California, and arriving at the beaches of Monterey in time for The Quail Motorcycle Gathering. All proceeds go to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

“Last year was a revelation,” said Bryan Carroll, producer of Why We Ride Films, organizers of the event. “The number of people who participated, and the diversity, was really inspirational. Riders came from multiple states and countries as far away as Mexico and India.”

dsc_7727_34438706934_oPeople of all stripes with a common love of motorcycle riding came together and took part, and that same wide array of participants are signing up this year as well. One-third of entrants for this year’s ride are new, building on word-of-mouth raving by past and returning riders and growing a community of like-minded people that feels like a large, extended family.

Of course, everyone loves a good cause, but the diversity of sponsors and participants really illustrates how the Hollywood, motorcycling and other communities have united to benefit those in need, namely children with serious medical issues. The ride has consistently doubled its raise every year, and this type of growth in funds raised is expected again this year.

Participants in the charity ride enjoy a bevy of perks (in addition to the awesome ride), including cocktails and vittles at the WWR Riders Dinner, gift bags, special guest speakers and VIP access to The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, including a private ride to the event, exclusive parking and private lounge access.

“Participants really engaged last year,” said Bryan Carroll. “We had a lot of people with a lot of different backgrounds, and everyone really came together, had fun and bonded. We’re looking to build on that this year, then really ramp things up for next year’s big fifth-annual ride.”

Of course, none of this would be possible without great sponsorship. Last year’s list of sponsors topped 25, and this year’s array for the Fourth Invitational WHY WE RIDE to The Quail is shaping up, including Refuse Specialists, Indian Motorcycles, MotoDoffo Wines, KlockWerks, D73 Leathers, Aerial Vuz, Formosa Group, eGrafx, Simi Valley Cycles and idPlatforms, with many more in the works. There are a few openings left for sponsorship, and anyone interested can contact ken@riseaboveconsulting.com.
